J.H. Kok Publishers was founded in 1894 in Kampen, The Netherlands, by Jan Hendrikus Kok. Being a publisher was just one of his occupations. He was also a bookseller, auctioneer, antiquarian and printer. During the early years authors mainly stemmed from the Dutch reformed church, but gradually they came from a broader, more general background. During the second half of the previous century other publishers of distinction joined Kok Publishers and soon books and magazines from both left- and right-wing, of both orthodox and liberal signature were being published. Today Kok Publishers is the leading publisher within The Netherlands in the field of religiously inspired books that are widely covered in national papers and magazines, on radio and television. Apart from organising book presentations and authors visits, the annual Dag van de Dierbaren (tr. Day of the beloved Departed) was initiated by Kok Publishers a few years ago. On behalf of the Christian booksellers Kok is taking part in the annual Maand van de Spiritualiteit (tr. Month of Spirituality).
